    Al estudiar el metabolismo, reconocemos que las vías metabólicas son conceptos hechos por el hombre con límites artificiales. Los estudiantes comúnmente piensan que las moléculas en las vías están ligadas exclusivamente a esas vías individuales, pero con la excepción de las reacciones que tienen barreras físicas (como las que ocurren dentro de un orgánelo), las vías metabólicas tienen muchos intermedios comunes utilizados en múltiples reacciones que ocurren en el misma ubicación al mismo tiempo y por lo tanto no se puede atribuir a ninguna vía. Lo mejor que podemos hacer es entender las direcciones generales de las vías en las células.
