    Las mitocondrias son el sitio principal de producción de ATP y energía en plantas y animales. Los números varían de 20 a 100,000 por célula y varían en forma y actividad.

    Las mitocondrias son orgánulos de doble membrana (como el núcleo) por lo que se dice que están rodeadas por una envoltura. La membrana externa (matriz) es muy elástica, la interna se pliega muchas veces (christae) y sobresale hacia la cavidad interna.
