    Cada uno de los 20 aminoácidos que se encuentran comúnmente en las proteínas tiene un grupo R (reactivo) con su propia química distintiva. Los grupos R difieren en su tamaño, polaridad, carga y potenciales de unión. Al pensar en los cambios evolutivos en las proteínas, es útil agrupar los aminoácidos por su química en un diagrama de Venn, mostrado en la página opuesta. En general, reemplazar un aminoácido por un segundo aminoácido del mismo sector puede considerarse un cambio conservador. El tamaño de un grupo R también es importante. La sustitución de un grupo R grande por uno pequeño puede alterar significativamente la función de una proteína.
