    Saber si una reacción es termodinámicamente favorable y su constante de equilibrio no nos dice mucho (o realmente nada) sobre si la reacción realmente ocurre en alguna medida significativa bajo las condiciones que nos preocupan. Para conocer la velocidad de reacción necesitamos conocer la cinética de reacción para el sistema específico con el que estamos tratando. La cinética de la reacción nos dice la velocidad a la que la reacción realmente ocurre bajo un conjunto particular de condiciones. Por ejemplo, consideremos un tronco de madera, el cual está compuesto principalmente por la celulosa polimérica carbohidrato (CH 2 O) n. En presencia de oxígeno molecular (O 2) la reacción:
