La estructura emerge de la superficie ventral del prosencéfalo como un cono ahusado que conecta el cerebro con la médula espinal. Adherida al tronco encefálico, pero considerada una región separada del cerebro adulto, se encuentra el cerebelo. El mesencéfalo coordina las representaciones sensoriales de los espacios perceptivos visuales, auditivos y somatosensoriales. El pons es la conexión principal con el cerebelo. Los pones y la médula regulan varias funciones cruciales, incluyendo los sistemas cardiovascular y respiratorio y las tasas.
