La tráquea está formada por 16 a 20 piezas apiladas en forma de C de cartílago hialino que están conectadas por tejido conectivo denso. El músculo traqueal y el tejido conectivo elástico forman juntos la membrana fibroelástica, una membrana flexible que cierra la superficie posterior de la tráquea, conectando los cartílagos en forma de C. La membrana fibroelástica permite que la tráquea se estire y se expanda ligeramente durante la inhalación y exhalación, mientras que los anillos de cartílago proporcionan soporte estructural y evitan que la tráquea se colapse. Además, el músculo traqueal se puede contraer para forzar el aire a través de la tráquea durante la exhalación. La tráquea está revestida con epitelio columnar ciliado pseudoestratificado, el cual es continuo con la laringe. El esófago bordea la tráquea posteriormente.
