La amígdala ubicada en la parte posterior de la garganta, la amígdala faríngea, a veces se denomina adenoide cuando está hinchada. Dicha hinchazón es una indicación de una respuesta inmune activa a la infección. Histológicamente, las amígdalas no contienen una cápsula completa, y la capa epitelial invagina profundamente en el interior de la amígdala para formar criptas amigdalares. Estas estructuras, que acumulan todo tipo de materiales ingresados al cuerpo a través de la alimentación y la respiración, en realidad “alientan” a los patógenos a penetrar profundamente en los tejidos amigdalares donde son actuados por numerosos folículos linfoides y eliminados. Esta parece ser la función principal de las amígdalas: ayudar a los cuerpos de los niños a reconocer, destruir y desarrollar inmunidad a los patógenos ambientales comunes para que sean protegidos en sus vidas posteriores. A menudo se extirpan las amígdalas en aquellos niños que tienen infecciones recurrentes de garganta, especialmente aquellos que involucran las amígdalas palatinas a ambos lados de la garganta, cuya hinchazón puede interferir con su respiración y/o deglución.
