Cada una de las dos trompas uterinas está cerca del ovario, pero no directamente conectada al mismo y dividida en secciones. El istmo es el extremo medial estrecho de cada tubo uterino que está conectado al útero. El infundíbulo distal ancho se ensancha con proyecciones delgadas, parecidas a dedos llamadas fimbrias. La región media del tubo, llamada ampolla, es donde a menudo ocurre la fertilización. Las trompas uterinas también tienen tres capas: una serosa externa, una capa media de músculo liso y una capa mucosa interna. Además de sus células secretoras de mucosidad, la mucosa interna contiene células ciliadas que laten en dirección al útero, produciendo una corriente que será crítica para mover el ovocito.
