Las fotografías (cortesía de G. Steven Martin) muestran fibroblastos de ratón (células de tejido conectivo) creciendo en cultivo. Las células de la foto superior muestran inhibición de contacto. Los de abajo no. Se dice que las células de abajo están transformadas. Estas células (llamadas células 3T3) no se derivaron de un cáncer de ratón sino que se produjeron mediante tratamiento de laboratorio de células normales. La radiación, ciertos químicos y ciertos virus son capaces de transformar las células. Aunque las células transformadas no derivan de cánceres, a menudo pueden convertirse en tumores malignos cuando se inyectan en un animal de prueba apropiado (como un ratón desnudo).
Las células normales son sumamente quisquillosas con respecto a los nutrientes que se les deben suministrar en su medio de cultivo tisular.
Las células cancerosas (y las células transformadas) generalmente pueden crecer en un medio de cultivo mucho más simple.
Las células normales normalmente tienen el conjunto normal de cromosomas de la especie; es decir, tienen un cariotipo normal.
Las células cancerosas casi siempre tienen un cariotipo anormal con
- números anormales de cromosomas (poliploides o aneuploides)
- cromosomas con estructura anormal:
- translocaciones
- eliminaciones
- duplicaciones
- inversiones
