Los vertebrados se encuentran entre los organismos más reconocibles del reino animal. Se han identificado más de 62 mil especies de vertebrados. Las especies de vertebrados que ahora viven representan solo una pequeña porción de los vertebrados que han existido. Los vertebrados extintos más conocidos son los dinosaurios, un grupo único de reptiles, que alcanzaron tamaños no vistos antes ni después en animales terrestres. Fueron los animales terrestres dominantes durante 150 millones de años, hasta que se extinguieron en una extinción masiva cercana al final del periodo Cretácico. Si bien no se sabe con certeza qué causó su extinción, se sabe mucho sobre la anatomía de los dinosaurios, dada la preservación de elementos esqueléticos en el registro fósil.
Actualmente, varias especies de vertebrados se enfrentan a la extinción principalmente debido a la pérdida de hábitat y contaminación. Según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, más de 6 mil especies de vertebrados se clasifican como amenazadas. Los anfibios y mamíferos son las clases con mayor porcentaje de especies amenazadas, con 29 por ciento de todos los anfibios y 21 por ciento de todos los mamíferos clasificados como amenazados. Se están haciendo intentos en todo el mundo para evitar la extinción de especies amenazadas. Por ejemplo, el Plan de Acción sobre Biodiversidad es un programa internacional, ratificado por 188 países, que está diseñado para proteger especies y hábitats.
