Esta enfermedad tuvo una alarmante tasa de muertes, matando a más de la mitad de los pacientes tempranos, muchos de los cuales eran nativos americanos. Estos adultos jóvenes antes sanos murieron por insuficiencia respiratoria completa. Se desconocía la enfermedad, y los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC), la agencia gubernamental de Estados Unidos responsable de manejar posibles epidemias, fue ingresada para investigar. Los científicos podrían haberse enterado de la enfermedad si hubieran sabido platicar con los curanderos navajos que vivían en la zona y que habían observado la conexión entre la lluvia y las poblaciones de ratones, prediciendo con ello el brote de 1993.
La causa de la enfermedad, determinada en pocas semanas por los investigadores de los CDC, fue el hantavirus conocido como Sin Nombre, el virus sin “nombre”. Con conocimientos de la medicina tradicional navajo, los científicos pudieron caracterizar rápidamente la enfermedad e instituir medidas de salud efectivas para prevenir su propagación. Este ejemplo ilustra la importancia de comprender las complejidades de los ecosistemas y cómo responden a los cambios en el ambiente.
