Inmunodeficiencia
La inmunodeficiencia ocurre cuando el sistema inmunitario no está funcionando correctamente. En consecuencia, no puede combatir los patógenos que un sistema inmunitario normal podría resistir. Más comúnmente, las enfermedades de inmunodeficiencia ocurren cuando las células T o B (o ambas) no funcionan tan bien como deberían, o cuando tu cuerpo no produce suficientes anticuerpos.
En raras ocasiones, el problema es causado por un gen defectuoso. Los trastornos de inmunodeficiencia hereditaria que afectan a las células B incluyen la hipogammaglobulinemia, que generalmente conduce a infecciones respiratorias y gastrointestinales, y la agammaglobulinemia, que resulta en infecciones graves temprano en la vida, y a menudo es mortal.
Más a menudo, la inmunodeficiencia se adquiere durante la vida de una persona. La inmunodeficiencia puede ocurrir por una variedad de razones:
- El sistema inmunológico naturalmente se vuelve menos efectivo a medida que las personas envejecen. Es por ello que las personas mayores son generalmente más susceptibles a las enfermedades.
- El sistema inmunitario puede verse dañado por otros trastornos, como la obesidad o el abuso de drogas.
- Ciertos medicamentos pueden suprimir el sistema inmunológico. Este es un efecto pretendido de los medicamentos que se administran a personas con órganos trasplantados. En muchos casos, sin embargo, es un efecto secundario no deseado de los medicamentos utilizados para tratar otras enfermedades.
- Algunos patógenos atacan y destruyen las células del sistema inmune. Un ejemplo es el virus conocido como VIH. Es la causa más común de inmunodeficiencia en el mundo actual.
