Las paredes celulares se encuentran tanto en procariotas como en eucariotas, aunque no todas las células tienen paredes celulares. En la Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\), el diagrama de una célula vegetal, se ve una estructura externa a la membrana plasmática que es la pared celular. La pared celular es la razón por la que verduras como el apio crujan cuando las muerdes.
Las células fúngicas y protistas también tienen paredes celulares, pero son estructuralmente diferentes de las que se encuentran en las plantas.
Si bien el componente principal de las paredes celulares procariotas es el peptidoglicano, la principal molécula orgánica en la pared celular vegetal es la celulosa, un polisacárido compuesto por cadenas largas y rectas de unidades de glucosa. Cuando la información nutricional se refiere a la fibra dietética, se refiere al contenido de celulosa de los alimentos. Las paredes celulares fúngicas están compuestas por una molécula llamada quitina.
Las células animales no tienen paredes celulares. El bistec no se cruje cuando lo muerdes.
