    La HPLC (también llamada a veces Cromatografía Líquida de Alta Presión) es una poderosa herramienta para separar moléculas más pequeñas en función de sus polaridades diferenciales. Emplea columnas con soportes hechos de perlas muy pequeñas que están tan apretadas que .ow de solventes/tampones a través de las columnas requiere la aplicación de altas presiones (de ahí el nombre). Los soportes utilizados pueden ser polares (separación de fases normales) o no polares (separación de fase inversa). En las separaciones de fases normales, las moléculas no polares eluyen primero seguidas de los compuestos más polares. Este orden se cambia en cromatografía de fase inversa. De los dos, la fase inversa se emplea mucho más comúnmente debido a perfiles cromatográficos más reproducibles (separaciones) que normalmente produce.
