El laboratorio presentado en este manual está diseñado para una clase de Genética o Biotecnología y ha sido utilizado tanto en instituciones de dos años como de cuatro años. A continuación se muestra el flujo de trabajo para el curso de un semestre. El laboratorio se basa en el concurso de ingeniería genética iGEM (iGEM.org). Los estudiantes tienen la tarea de diseñar y luego diseñar un dispositivo biológico en una bacteria (E.coli) usando partes de ADN estandarizadas llamadas Bio-Bricks del registro de iGEM. El proceso de ingeniería del dispositivo requiere la iteración de técnicas estándar de clonación de biología molecular que se describen en este manual de laboratorio, algunas incluyendo protocolos de video. Adicionalmente, se proporcionan apéndices con recetas de reactivos, lista de abastecimientos/recursos y recomendaciones de instructores. Se anima a los instructores a ver una serie de videos de implementación creados para el taller de capacitación de profesores de Biología sintética de Arkansas-Cure Projects.
