Esta pared celular primaria se produce en la superficie de todas las células vegetales. Se compone sustancialmente de moléculas de celulosa agrupadas para formar fibrillas.
La pared celular primaria es la única pared celular presente en algunas células. En otras células se deposita una pared celular secundaria dentro de la pared celular primaria. Esta pared celular secundaria puede contener lignina. La lignina hace que la pared celular sea rígida y más fuerte. Una membrana celular se encuentra inmediatamente adyacente a la pared celular, en la superficie interior, y rodea el contenido de la célula.
Para permitir la comunicación entre las células hay poros revestidos de membrana, o plasmodesmas, que atraviesan las paredes celulares.
