    La historia de la vida en la tierra se remonta a más de 3.5 mil millones de años, con toda la vida evolucionando de un ancestro común y diversificándose a lo que vemos actualmente en la tierra hoy. La historia evolutiva de un grupo de especies se conoce como filogenia. El proceso de reconstrucción de una filogenia forma parte de la ciencia de la sistemática (el estudio científico de la diversidad biológica y su clasificación). La taxonomía es la ciencia de la clasificación (categorización) y nomenclatura (nomenclatura). Los biólogos prefieren un sistema de clasificación que indique relaciones evolutivas entre organismos. La cladística es un método de clasificación en el que los organismos se categorizan en grupos (o clados) con base en el ancestro común más reciente. Esta metodología produce un árbol filogenético que es una representación comprobable de la verdadera filogenia teórica. La cladística difiere de los métodos históricos de clasificación por basarse en caracteres derivados compartidos (un personaje compartido por organismos estrechamente relacionados porque lo heredaron de su antepasado más cercano y que no está presente en ancestros más distantes) en lugar de similitud general.
