Reconocer las características distintivas de las selvas templadas y las adaptaciones vegetales del bioma.
Las selvas templadas, a veces llamadas bosques mixtos de hoja perenne, son comunes en la costa occidental de Estados Unidos, desde Alaska hasta California. Sin embargo, también se pueden encontrar parches más pequeños de este bioma en otros contenidos. Las condiciones de este bioma son similares a las de los bosques caducifolios templados pero los inviernos son más fríos y duran más. El suelo en este bioma es generalmente pobre en niveles de nutrientes. Al estar cerca de la costa, la temperatura rara vez va por debajo del punto de congelación, promediando entre 39°F y 54°F. La precipitación promedia alrededor de 55 pulgadas pero puede alcanzar hasta 100 pulgadas al año.
Adaptaciones
El término bosque siempreverde mixto proviene del hecho de que tanto los árboles caducifolios como los siempreverdes (coníferas) son comunes en este bioma. Estos árboles de hoja perenne suelen ser altos y llamativos. Los árboles más altos del mundo, las secuoyas costeras, se pueden encontrar en este bioma. A menudo, se pueden encontrar musgos y epífitas creciendo en los árboles altos a medida que alcanzan el sol (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)). En el sotobosque son comunes los helechos, así como otras plantas tolerantes a la sombra. También se pueden observar vistosas flores silvestres y hongos en el sotobosque.
