Antes de los cítricos o uvas sin semillas, había plantas vasculares sin semillas que existían hace más de 360 millones de años. Utilizan esporas para la reproducción en lugar de conos o flores. Por ejemplo, los helechos batidores (Psilotum nudum) son plantas vasculares antiguas sin semillas, sin raíces, sin hojas que realizan la fotosíntesis a través de sus tallos verdes. Los helechos son plantas vasculares perennes sin semillas y buenos para purificar el aire a su alrededor, así como acumular metales pesados.
Los helechos no tienen semillas pero sí tienen reproducción sexual utilizando manchas sori inferiores que son paquetes de esporas. En nombre de la flor, utilizan un gametofito grande en forma de corazón con óvulos y esperma.
