Andropogon gerardii

El bluestem grande es uno de los pastos dominantes de la pradera de pasto alto. Un pasto de racimo erguido, el follaje cambia de color de azul-verde a bronce rico en el otoño. La inflorescencia es de 3 ramas y comúnmente se dice que se asemeja a un pie de pavo. Cada rama tiene una espiga morada que se vuelve bronce en el otoño.
Nativares:
- 'Blackhawks': El follaje es de color púrpura más oscuro que otros nativares. El follaje comienza de color verde oscuro y adquiere tonos morados a mediados del verano, volviéndose completamente púrpura oscuro para el otoño. Puede ser susceptible a la oxidación.
- 'Viento Bailante': Tallos y flores de cobre rojizo, se vuelve púrpura y rojo oscuro en el otoño.
- 'Indian Warrior': Follaje y flores de color púrpura oscuro, se abre extendiéndose con la edad.
- 'Danza de la lluvia': El follaje y las flores son moradas con puntas rojas. El follaje se vuelve granate en el otoño.
- 'Octubre Rojo': Follaje rojo en verano y otoño

Las especies que se alimentan de gran estem azul según la literatura son el patrón de carretera de Oslar (Amblyscirtes oslari), patrón de Delaware (Anatrytone logan), patrón Arogos (Atrytone arogos), patrón espolvoreado (Atrytonopsis hianna), gusano cogollero de cabeza de trigo ( Faronta diffusa), patrón Dakota (Hesperia dacotae), patrón telaraña (Hesperia metea), patrón ottoe (Hesperia ottoe), patrón indio (Hesperia sassacus), barrenador de Newman (Meropleon ambifusca) y patrón byssus (Problema byssus ).
