Cuando una planta crece en tierra o mezcla para macetas, elimina los nutrientes así como el agua del suelo. Aunque una planta produce (fija) sus propias moléculas a base de carbono a partir de la fotosíntesis, todos los demás nutrientes son absorbidas por las raíces del suelo. A medida que cosechamos material vegetal y el material vegetal muerto se descompone, estos nutrientes se agotan. Esta lección analiza cómo este proceso cambia la estructura, la textura y la fertilidad del suelo.
