El periciclo y algún procámbium residual se unen para formar el cámbium vascular, un meristema secundario que produce tejido vascular. El otro meristemo secundario, el cámbium del corcho, se forma inicialmente únicamente a partir del periciclo.
Cada uno de estos meristemos secundarios se divide en dos direcciones para formar un tejido secundario diferente al interior y al exterior de la capa meristemática, respectivamente al centro de la planta.
El cambium vascular produce xilema secundario al interior de la raíz y floema secundario hacia el exterior.
El corcho cambium produce fallodermo, un tejido de almacenamiento, hacia el interior de la raíz y corcho, una capa protectora de células muertas suberizadas, hacia el exterior. Estas tres capas —el fallodermo, el cambium de corcho y el corcho— se denominan peridermo. A medida que se forma la primera capa peridérmica, separa la epidermis, la corteza y la endodermis de los tejidos conductores de la raíz. Las células de la epidermis y corteza mueren y se desprenden a medida que avanza el crecimiento secundario.
La raíz de pino de abajo tiene una capa de peridermo completamente formada. ¿Se pueden etiquetar los tejidos y meristemos descritos anteriormente? ¿Cuáles son los grandes agujeros en la raíz?
