La luz es una forma de energía electromagnética, lo que significa que viaja como una onda y no requiere de un medio para moverse. La luz, a diferencia del sonido, puede viajar a nosotros desde el sol a través del vacío del espacio. Una vez que llega a la Tierra, hay partículas para que ésta se refleje, sea absorbida por, o que pase a través de ella. Dependiendo de la longitud de la onda de luz —piense en estirar o comprimir un escurrimiento— y ya sea que se refleje o no, nuestros ojos la interpretarán como colores diferentes, o no podremos verla en absoluto. De hecho, nuestros ojos sólo captan una pequeña fracción del espectro de luz.
Cuando miramos objetos, podemos verlos como de cierto color. Esto se debe a que ese objeto refleja esa longitud de onda particular de luz hacia nosotros. Los objetos que son blancos reflejan todo el espectro hacia nosotros. Los objetos que son verdaderamente negros absorben toda la luz, no reflejando nada hacia atrás. Los objetos que son de un color particular, como el verde, absorben todas las otras longitudes de onda de la luz visible excepto el verde, reflejando ese verde hacia nuestros ojos. Los pigmentos son moléculas que reflejan colores específicos.
