Cuando se estableció el Servicio Forestal de Estados Unidos en 1905 se declaró que, “Hoy entendemos que los incendios forestales están totalmente bajo el control de los hombres”. La humanidad asume una y otra vez que la naturaleza puede ser controlada, y al Servicio Forestal Nacional se le mostró cuán equivocada estaba su suposición 5 años después... El Gran Incendio de 1910 quemó alrededor de 3 millones de acres y mató a 86 personas. Como consecuencia de este incendio, se implementaron serias políticas de extinción de incendios y se abofeteó a Smokey The Bear en carteles para representar la causa. En ese punto, Smokey el Oso nos dijo, “sólo se puede prevenir el incendio forestal”, lo que indica que todo incendio es malo. Sólo ha sido en las últimas dos décadas que se han cuestionado estas políticas y se han dado cuenta de las repercusiones de la extinción de incendios de las mismas. Ahora Smokey ha actualizado el dicho a, “solo tú puedes prevenir incendios forestales”, indicando que sólo algunos tipos de incendios son malos.
