Tras el desarrollo de la tecnología nuclear al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial con fines militares, la energía nuclear rápidamente adquirió un nuevo camino en tiempos de paz para la producción económica de electricidad. Once años después del final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, muy poco tiempo en términos energéticos, el primer reactor nuclear comercial produjo electricidad en Calder Hall en Sellafield, Inglaterra. El número de reactores nucleares creció de manera constante a más de 400 en 1990 (cifra\(\PageIndex{a}\)), cuatro años después del desastre de Chernobyl en 1986 y once años después de Three Mile Island en 1979 (ver Consecuencias de la energía nuclear). El número de reactores en funcionamiento se mantuvo aproximadamente plano durante dos décadas, y Estados Unidos no ha construido una nueva instalación nuclear desde 1996. El número de centrales nucleares en funcionamiento disminuyó en 2011, cuando el derrumbe en la Central Nuclear Fukushima Daiichi provocó que Japón cerrara todas sus centrales nucleares. Desde entonces, Japón ha reanudado el uso de algunos de sus reactores nucleares.
La producción mundial de electricidad a partir de energía nuclear fue de aproximadamente 2795.96 teravatios-hora (TWh) en 2019, lo que comprende 10.4% de la producción de electricidad y 4.3% del consumo total de energía a nivel mundial (cifra\(\PageIndex{b}\)). (Para referencia, Estados Unidos generó alrededor de 4100 TWh de electricidad total en 2019). Estados Unidos produjo y consumió alrededor del 30.5% de la energía nuclear mundial en 2019, donde la energía nuclear proporcionó alrededor del 19.6% de la electricidad y 8.0% del consumo total de energía (cifra\(\PageIndex{c}\)).
