En este método, grandes barcazas llevan los desechos al mar y los arrojan al océano (figura\(\PageIndex{a}\)). Esa práctica ahora está prohibida en Estados Unidos debido a los problemas de contaminación que creó. Sin embargo, mucha basura se escapa al océano a través de la basura y el vertimiento ilegal. Adicionalmente, el viento transporta basura de contenedores sobrellenos, vertederos o vertederos abiertos (donde todavía se usan).
Los parches de basura se forman a partir de los desechos que escapan al océano. El plástico se descompone en trozos más pequeños cuando se expone a la luz solar y oxígeno abundante. Estas piezas de plástico quedan atrapadas en partes tranquilas del océano que están rodeadas de fuertes corrientes circulares (figura\(\PageIndex{b}\)). Los parches de basura pueden no ser visibles desde la superficie del océano, y las piezas de plástico pueden tener hasta 20 metros de profundidad.
El plástico y otros desechos dañan la vida marina de varias maneras. Viejas redes de pesca y anillos de plástico de seis paquetes atrapan la vida silvestre Adicionalmente, los organismos que ingieren plástico corren el riesgo de asfixia. El plástico ingerido puede cortar órganos internos, limitar el espacio disponible para los alimentos y transportar toxinas (figura\(\PageIndex{c}\)).
