Muchas de las pesquerías del mundo están colapsadas, y en los océanos parece que estamos en un camino como el que nuestros depredadores predecesores tomaron en tierra.
Hay mejores enfoques ecológicos —un enfoque de “esfuerzo constante”, por ejemplo, en lugar de la “cosecha constante” que aquí se examina, pero las presiones económicas, sociales y políticas les han impartido un uso extensivo.
Esperamos que este capítulo le haya demostrado que un examen insuficiente de las ecuaciones ecológicas aplicadas a gran escala puede generar desastres, que los equilibrios no deben considerarse aparte de su estabilidad, y que el manejo de los sistemas ecológicos reales requiere atención a la historia natural y a las condiciones sociales.
