Los recursos energéticos y minerales son vitales para la sociedad moderna, y es el papel de un geólogo ubicar estos recursos en beneficio humano. Los recursos energéticos se agrupan en general como renovables o no renovables. Los geólogos pueden ayudar a localizar los mejores lugares para explotar los recursos renovables (por ejemplo, localizar una presa), pero comúnmente tienen la tarea de encontrar combustibles fósiles no renovables. Los recursos minerales también se agrupan en dos categorías: metálicos y no metálicos. Los minerales tienen una amplia variedad de procesos que los concentran a niveles económicos, y generalmente se extraen a través de métodos superficiales o subterráneos.
