    El año 1660 marca una ruptura entre dos oleadas de colonización inglesa. Antes de 1640, se crearon colonias en Nueva Inglaterra, Virginia y Maryland. En su mayor parte, las colonias establecidas durante este periodo fueron creadas por charters sostenidos indirectamente de la Corona. Los que aparecieron después de 1660 fueron principalmente propietarios, otorgados como subvenciones a los amigos de Carlos II, quien fue “restaurado” al trono en 1660. A finales del siglo XVII fue testigo de un intento de la monarquía inglesa de apretar las riendas sobre sus colonias americanas, ya que el Parlamento aprobó nuevas Actas de Comercio y Navegación y se creó el Dominio de Nueva Inglaterra. Cuando Santiago II fue derrocado en 1688, una serie de revueltas en las colonias pusieron fin a instituciones como el Dominio de Nueva Inglaterra. A finales de siglo, sin embargo, muchas colonias habían perdido sus cartas y se convirtieron en colonias reales bajo el control directo de la Corona. En 1735, se estableció la última colonia inglesa, Georgia, como colonia tampón entre las colonias americanas y la Florida española.
