Para construir funciones trigonométricas inversas primero tenemos que restringir sus dominios para hacerlos uno a uno (o inyectivos). Hacemos esto como se muestra a continuación
\[ \sin\theta \nonumber \]
Dominio:\(-\frac{\pi}{2} \leq \theta \leq \frac{\pi}{2}\)
Rango:\(-1 \leq \sin \theta \leq 1\)
\[ \cos \theta \nonumber \]
Dominio:\(0 \leq \theta \leq \pi\)
Rango:\(-1 \leq \cos \theta \leq 1\)
\[ \tan \theta \nonumber \]
Dominio:\(-\frac{\pi}{2} \lt \theta \lt \frac{\pi}{2}\)
Rango: todos los números reales
\[ \arcsin x \nonumber \]
Dominio:\(-1 \leq x \leq 1\)
Rango:\(-\frac{\pi}{2} \leq \arcsin x \leq \frac{\pi}{2}\)
\[ \arccos x \nonumber \]
Dominio:\(-1 \leq x \leq 1\)
Rango:\(0 \leq \arccos x \leq \pi\)
\[ \arctan x \nonumber \]
Dominio: todos los números reales
Rango:\(-\frac{\pi}{2} \lt \arctan x \lt \frac{\pi}{2}\)
Como estas funciones son inversas unas de otras tenemos
\ begin {align*}\ arcsin (\ sin\ theta) &=\ theta & -\ frac {\ pi} {2}\ leq\ theta\ leq\ frac {\ pi} {2}\\\ arccos (\ cos\ theta) &=\ theta & 0\ leq\ theta\ leq\ leq\ pi\\ arctan (\ tan\ theta) &=\ theta & -\ frac {\ pi} {2}\ leq\ theta\ leq\ frac {\ pi} {2}\ end {align*}
y también
\ begin {align*}\ sin (\ arcsin x) &= x & -1\ leq x\ leq 1\\\ cos (\ arccos x) &= x & -1\ leq x\ leq 1\\\ tan (\ arctan x) &= x &\ texto {cualquier real $x$}\ end {align*}
Podemos leer otras combinaciones de funciones trigonométricas y sus inversos, como, por ejemplo,\(\cos(\arcsin x)\text{,}\) fuera de triángulos como
Hemos elegido la hipotenusa y lados opuestos del triángulo para que sean de longitud 1 y\(x\text{,}\) respectivamente, de manera\(\sin(\theta)=x\text{.}\) que es decir,\(\theta = \arcsin x\text{.}\) podamos luego leer fuera del triángulo que
\ begin {align*}\ cos (\ arcsin x) &=\ cos (\ theta) =\ sqrt {1-x^2}\ end {align*}
Podemos llegar a la misma conclusión usando identidades trigonométricas, de la siguiente manera.
- Escribir Lo\(\arcsin x=\theta\text{.}\) sabemos\(\sin(\theta)=x\) y deseamos computar\(\cos(\theta)\text{.}\) Así que solo necesitamos expresarnos\(\cos(\theta)\) en términos de\(\sin(\theta)\text{.}\)
- Para ello hacemos uso de una de las identidades pitagóricas
\ begin {alinear*}\ sin^2\ theta +\ cos^2\ theta &=1\\\ cos\ theta &=\ pm\ sqrt {1-\ sin^2\ theta}\ end {alinear*}
- Así
\ begin {reunir*}\ cos (\ arcsin x) =\ cos\ theta =\ pm\ sqrt {1-\ sin^2\ theta}\ end {reunir*}
- Para determinar qué rama debemos usar necesitamos considerar el dominio y el rango de\(\arcsin x\text{:}\)
\ begin {align*}\ text {Dominio:} -1\ leq x\ leq 1 &&\ text {Rango:} -\ frac {\ pi} {2}\ leq\ arcsin x\ leq\ frac {\ pi} {2}\ end {align*}
Así estamos aplicando el coseno a un ángulo que siempre se encuentra entre\(-\frac{\pi}{2}\) y\(\frac{\pi}{2}\text{.}\) Coseno no es negativo en este rango. De ahí que debamos tomar la rama positiva y\ begin {alinear*}\ cos (\ arcsin x) &=\ sqrt {1-\ sin^2\ theta} =\ sqrt {1-\ sen ^2 (\ arcsin x)}\\ &=\ sqrt {1-x^2}\ end {align*}
De una manera muy similar podemos simplificar\(\tan(\arccos x)\text{.}\)
- Escribe\(\arccos x=\theta\text{,}\) y luego
\ begin {align*}\ tan (\ arccos x) &=\ tan\ theta =\ frac {\ sin\ theta} {\ cos\ theta}\ end {align*}
- Ahora el denominador es fácil ya que\(\cos \theta = \cos \arccos x = x\text{.}\)
- El numerador es casi el mismo que el cómputo anterior.
\ begin {alinear*}\ sin\ theta &=\ pm\ sqrt {1-\ cos^2\ theta}\\ &=\ pm\ sqrt {1-x^2}\ end {align*}
- Para determinar qué rama volvemos a considerar dominios y rangos:
\ begin {align*}\ text {Dominio:} -1\ leq x\ leq 1 &&\ text {Rango:} 0\ leq\ arccos x\ leq\ pi\ end {align*}
Así estamos aplicando seno a un ángulo que siempre se encuentra entre\(0\) y\(\pi\text{.}\) Sine no es negativo en este rango y así tomamos la rama positiva. - Poner todo de nuevo juntos da
\ begin {align*}\ tan (\ arccos x) &=\ frac {\ sqrt {1-x^2}} {x}\ end {align*}
Completar las 9 posibilidades da:
\ begin {align*}\ sin (\ arcsin x) &= x &\ sin (\ arccos x) &=\ sqrt {1-x^2} &\ sin (\ arctan x) &=\ frac {x} {\ sqrt {1+x^2}}\\ cos (\ arcsin x) &=\ sqrt {1-x^2} &\ cos (\ arcsin x) &=\ sqrt {1-x^2} &\ cos (\ arcsin x)) &= x &\ cos (\ arctan x) &=\ frac {1} {\ sqrt {1+x^2}}\\\ tan (\ arcsin x) &=\ frac {x} {\ sqrt {1-x^2 }} &\ tan (\ arccos x) &=\ frac {\ sqrt {1-x^2}} {x} &\ tan (\ arctan x) &= x\ end {alinear*}
