Por lo general, una clave consta de un campo, pero puede constar de más de un campo. Existen dos tipos de claves:
- Clave principal: para garantizar que no haya dos registros idénticos en una tabla, se designa clave principal a un campo de cada tabla. Una clave principal consta de uno o más campos que identifican de forma exclusiva cada registro que se almacena en la tabla. A menudo, hay un identificador único, como un número de identificación (ID de empleado, ID de cliente, etc.), un número de serie o un número de seguro social que sirve como clave principal. Elija siempre una clave principal cuyo valor no cambie. Aparece un icono de clave junto al nombre del campo de clave principal. Los campos de tipo de datos de numeración automática son buenas claves principales.
- Clave externa: una tabla también puede tener una o más claves externas. Una clave externa contiene valores que corresponden a los valores de la clave principal de otra tabla. Por ejemplo, puede tener una tabla de pedidos en la que cada pedido tenga un número de ID de cliente que corresponda a un registro de la tabla de clientes. El campo de ID de cliente es una clave externa de la tabla de pedidos.
