El desarrollo del lenguaje tiene algo realmente especial. Más allá de la asombrosa hazaña de que los bebés y los niños pequeños adquieran sistemas lingüísticos complejos con rapidez y relativa facilidad, el lenguaje cambia las interacciones que tiene el niño con las personas a su alrededor y su forma de pensar sobre su entorno físico. El lenguaje permite a los adultos y a los niños compartir sus pensamientos y sentimientos íntimos y hablar sobre acontecimientos pasados, presentes y futuros. Con el lenguaje, los niños transforman los pensamientos sobre el mundo que les rodea con nuevas formas de etiquetar, organizar, clasificar y memorizar. Además, es importante que presenten una capacidad lingüística temprana en la niñez no solo porque influirá en su capacidad lingüística posterior, sino porque también afectará el desarrollo cognitivo en la infancia posterior.
