El camino del Sol a través de la esfera celeste es muy cercano al de los planetas y la luna. Después de que los relojes estaban disponibles, era un trabajo relativamente sencillo para los astrónomos relacionar el camino del Sol durante el día con el de las estrellas de la noche, y dibujarlo en sus cartas estelares. Por su relación con los eclipses, ese camino se conoce como la eclíptica.
