Al usar el modelo para hacer predicciones, se debe tener cuidado de elegir únicamente valores de los\(X\) que estén en el rango de\(X\) valores de los datos. En el ejemplo de lluvia/ventas, los valores de\(X\) rango de 10 a 40 pulgadas de lluvia. Elegir un valor\(X\) fuera de este rango se llama extrapolación y podría llevar a resultados no válidos. Por ejemplo, si usamos el modelo para predecir las ventas para una ciudad con 80 pulgadas de lluvia, obtenemos un resultado negativo imposible para las ventas:
