Las condiciones de frontera se derivan de modo sencillo a partir de las ecMm; se pueden encontrar en [Born]. Las condiciones de frontera nos dicen qué relaciones hay entre \(\mathbf{E}\) y H a ambos lados de la discontinuidad. A los valores del segundo medio los denotaremos con primas. Nos es suficiente con las siguientes condiciones de frontera

donde el subíndice \(t g\) significa "la componente tangencial del vector sobre la superficie".
