    En el caso más general la luz es superposición de ondas monocromáticas. Entonces el vector campo eléctrico ya no describe una elipse, y en general, no sigue ninguna trayectoria reconocible (es lo que se llama luz no polarizada o luz natural). Pero puede ocurrir que la trayectoria se aproxime a una de las polarizaciones simples que hemos visto. Es lo que se conoce bajo el nombre de polarización parcial.
