Para observar interferencia en condiciones óptimas (término interferencial más grande) escogeremos ambos vectores paralelos, es decir, ondas con el mismo estado de polarización especificado por el vector unitario \(\mathbf{u}\).

Podemos escribir la igualdad vectorial \(\mathbf{E}=\mathbf{E}_{1}+\mathbf{E}_{2}\) como \(E=E_{1}+E_{2}\). Es decir, vamos a asumir tácitamente en lo que sigue que todas las ondas tienen el mismo estado de polarización. Esto nos conduce a la descripción escalar, más sencilla.
