Fundada por el famoso Sargón el Grande, Akkad era un poderoso imperio militar.
Akkad
La competencia entre Akkad en el norte y Ur en el sur creó dos potencias regionales centralizadas al final del tercer milenio (c. 2334—2193 a.C.E.).
Esta centralización fue de naturaleza militar y el arte de este periodo generalmente se volvió más marcial. El Imperio acadio fue iniciado por Sargón, un hombre de una familia humilde que subió al poder y fundó la ciudad real de Akkad (Akkad aún no se ha localizado, aunque una teoría la coloca bajo la moderna Bagdad).
Cabeza de un gobernante acadio
Esta imagen de un gobernante acadio no identificado (algunos dicen que es Sargón, pero nadie lo sabe) es una de las imágenes más bellas y aterradoras de todo el arte del Antiguo Cercano Oriente. La cabeza de bronce de tamaño natural se muestra en una claridad geométrica aguda, mechones de cabello, labios rizados y una ceja arrugada. Quizás más impresionante que el rostro poderoso y sombrío de este gobernante es el violento ataque que lo mutiló en la antigüedad.
Ur
El reino de Akkad termina con contiendas internas e invasión por parte de los gutíos desde las montañas de Zagros hasta el noreste. Los gutíos fueron derrocados a su vez y la ciudad de Ur, al sur de Uruk, se volvió dominante. El rey Ur-Nammu estableció la tercera dinastía de Ur, también denominada periodo Ur III.
