Este video presenta al curador del Met, Joan R. Mertens, sobre la autosuficiencia en la estatua de mármol de un kouros (juventud). Este kouros es una de las primeras estatuas de mármol de una figura humana tallada en Ática. La postura rígida, con la pierna izquierda hacia adelante y los brazos a un lado, se derivó del arte egipcio. La pose proporcionó una fórmula clara y simple que fue utilizada por los escultores griegos a lo largo del siglo VI a.C.E. En esta figura temprana predominan las formas geométricas, casi abstractas, y los detalles anatómicos se representan en hermosos patrones análogos. La estatua marcaba la tumba de un joven aristócrata ateniense.
