I. Introducción El judaísmo se originó en la tierra de Israel (también conocida como Palestina) en el Medio Oriente. Posteriormente, las comunidades judías han existido en un momento u otro en casi todas las partes del mundo, resultado tanto de las migraciones voluntarias de judíos como del exilio o expulsiones forzadas (ver Diáspora). A principios de la década de 1990 la población judía mundial total era de unos 12.8 millones, de los cuales alrededor de 5.5 millones vivían en Estados Unidos, más de 3.9 millones en Israel, y casi 1.2 millones en la Unión Soviética, los tres mayores centros de asentamiento judío. Alrededor de 1.2 millones de judíos vivían en el resto de Europa, la mayoría de ellos en Francia y Gran Bretaña. Alrededor de 356,700 vivían en el resto de Norteamérica, y 32.700 en Asia aparte de Israel. Alrededor de 433,400 judíos vivían en Centro y Sudamérica, y alrededor de 148,700 vivían en África. |
