Este fenómeno se llama holgazaneo social. Una razón para el holgazaneo social parece ser una difusión de responsabilidad. Cada miembro de un grupo siente menos responsabilidad y rendición de cuentas por el trabajo de lo que lo harían si tuvieran la responsabilidad exclusiva. Esto se confirma por el hecho de que el holgazán social puede reducirse si cada miembro de un grupo tiene una tarea específica o si cada miembro es responsable del trabajo que realiza.
Muchas clases universitarias cuentan con proyectos grupales. La mayoría de los estudiantes no están cautivados con el trabajo en grupo, y la objeción más común es precisamente que promueve el holgazaneo social, para que algunas personas hagan más de lo que les corresponde en el trabajo. Una forma de reducir el holgazaneo social es asignarle a cada miembro del grupo un rol específico, y calificarlo en su contribución al grupo. El holgazaneo social es relevante en la comprensión de la dinámica de los grupos y en la explicación del comportamiento de sus miembros. Ambos están relacionados con el razonamiento, pero en este capítulo, nos centraremos en varios temas que involucran el razonamiento aún más directamente.
