Vivimos en una época de acceso sin precedentes a la información y exposición a culturas de todo el mundo. El estudio académico de las costumbres humanas, los idiomas, las creencias religiosas, las instituciones sociales, la vida familiar, etc., es el tema de la antropología. La investigación académica de la música de diferentes culturas se llama etnomusicología, y abarca el aprendizaje sobre cómo, por qué, dónde y cuándo se crea la música, quién la interpreta y sus características distintivas. Las siguientes secciones ofrecen una introducción a las ricas, complejas y diversas culturas musicales de cuatro áreas del mundo: África, India, Indonesia y el Caribe.
