El auge del minimalismo en la década de 1960 fue un avance significativo en la música artística. Si bien cuatro artistas suelen estar asociados con el minimalismo —La Monte Young (n. 1935), Terry Riley (n. 1935), Phillip Glass (n. 1937), Steve Reich (n. 1936) — nos centraremos en sólo dos técnicas en este capítulo. El primero, el minimalismo aditivo, está asociado con las primeras piezas minimalistas de Philip Glass. El segundo, el cambio de fase, está asociado con Steve Reich.
