    Un objeto destinado a realizar almacenamiento, transmisión o procesamiento de información debe evitar los errores inherentes a las interacciones impredecibles con el entorno. Parecería que el objeto más simple que pudiera procesar información necesitaría dos estados. Un bit de información podría estar asociado con el conocimiento de qué estado está ocupado. Los objetos más complejos, con más de dos estados, podrían representar más de un bit de información.
