    La ganancia de voltaje de bucle abierto del amplificador operacional típico es muy alta, acercándose a 100,000 a bajas frecuencias. Con una ganancia tan alta, incluso las diferencias diminutas entre las señales de entrada inversora y no inversora se ampliarán hasta el punto de causar saturación. Por lo tanto, si la señal de entrada no inversora excede la señal de entrada inversora, la salida estará en saturación positiva. Si las señales se invierten, entonces resulta una saturación negativa. Si ambas entradas son idénticas, entonces la salida irá a saturación positiva o negativa, dependiendo de los desplazamientos internos del amplificador operacional.
