    Para pequeños voltajes de fuente de drenaje de CA (<100 mV), el JFET aparece como una resistencia de drenaje a fuente. Esta resistencia es controlada por la compuerta de CC a la tensión de la fuente. Esto se conoce como el voltaje de control o\(V_C\). Cuanto más negativo sea el potencial, mayor será la resistencia. La resistencia mínima se logrará cuando\(V_{GS} = 0\). Si\(V_{GS}\) es continuamente variable entonces el JFET se comporta como un reóstato, también llamado resistencia controlada por voltaje. La adición de una resistencia separada en el drenaje creará un potenciómetro controlado por voltaje. A diferencia de un verdadero potenciómetro, la señal de salida no caerá a cero debido a la mínima resistencia del JFET\((R_{ds(on)})\). Se pueden conectar múltiples unidades en cascada para aumentar la atenuación. Si el voltaje de control está configurado para lograr solo los valores máximo y mínimo, el circuito se comporta como un interruptor que permite o despermite el paso de la señal. Esto se conoce como un interruptor analógico.
