    Cuando Felix Klein (1849—1925) aceptó una cátedra en la Universidad de Erlangen, esbozó en su discurso inaugural un programa para clasificar diferentes geometrías. El centro del programa de Klein fue la teoría de grupos: consideró que la geometría era el estudio de propiedades que quedan invariantes bajo grupos de transformación. Los grupos, especialmente los grupos matriciales, han adquirido ahora importancia en el estudio de la simetría y han encontrado aplicaciones en disciplinas como la química y la física. En la primera parte de este capítulo, examinaremos algunos de los grupos matriciales clásicos, como el grupo lineal general, el grupo lineal especial y el grupo ortogonal. Luego utilizaremos estos grupos matriciales para investigar algunas de las ideas detrás de la simetría geométrica.
