    En un sistema físico una cantidad a menudo se puede describir con un solo número. Por ejemplo, necesitamos conocer solo un número para describir la temperatura, la masa o el volumen. La distribución de la temperatura sobre un objeto sólido requiere cuatro números: tres para identificar cada punto dentro del objeto y un cuarto para describir la temperatura en ese punto.
