    Dejar\(f(x)\) ser una función continua y dejar\(a_1\lt b_1\) con\(f(a_1)\) y\(f(b_1)\) ser de signo opuesto.

    Como hemos visto, el método de la bisección genera una secuencia de intervalos\(I_n=[a_n,b_n]\text{,}\)\(n=1,2,3,\cdots\) con, para cada uno\(n\text{,}\)\(f(a_n)\) y\(f(b_n)\) teniendo signo opuesto (de manera que, por continuidad,\(f\) tiene una raíz en\(I_n\)). Una vez que\(I_n\text{,}\) tenemos elegimos en\(I_{n+1}\) base al signo de\(f\) en el punto medio,\(\frac{a_n+b_n}{2}\text{,}\) de\(I_n\text{.}\) Dado que siempre probamos el punto medio, el posible error disminuye en un factor de 2 cada paso.

    El método de posición falsa intenta hacer que todo el procedimiento sea más eficiente probando el signo de\(f\) en un punto que está más cerca del final de\(I_n\) donde la magnitud de\(f\) es menor. Para ser precisos, aproximamos\(y=f(x)\) por la ecuación de la línea recta a través\(\big(a_n,f(a_n)\big)\) y\(\big(b_n,f(b_n)\big)\text{.}\)

    La ecuación de esa línea recta es

    \[ y = F(x) = f(a_n) + \frac{f(b_n)-f(a_n)}{b_n-a_n}(x-a_n) \nonumber \]

    Luego el método de posición falsa prueba el signo de\(f(x)\) al valor de\(x\) donde\(F(x)=0\text{.}\)

    \ begin {alinear*} & F (x) = f (a_n) +\ frac {f (b_n) -f (a_n)} {b_n-a_n} (x-a_n) =0\\ &\ iff x= a_n -\ frac {b_n-a_n} {f (b_n) -f (a_n)} f (a_n) =\ frac {a_n f (b_n) - b_n f (a_n)} {f (b_n) -f (a_n)}\ final {alinear*}

    Entonces una vez que tenemos el intervalo\(I_n\text{,}\) el método false position genera el intervalo\(I_{n+1}\) por la siguiente regla. 1

    Ecuación C.3.1 Método de posición de fale.

    Establecer\(c_n=\frac{a_n f(b_n) - b_n f(a_n) }{f(b_n)-f(a_n)}\text{.}\) Si\(f(c_n)\) tiene el mismo signo que\(f(a_n)\text{,}\) entonces

    \[ I_{n+1}=[a_{n+1},b_{n+1}]\quad\text{with}\quad a_{n+1}=c_n,\ b_{n+1}=b_n \nonumber \]

    y si\(f(c_n)\) y\(f(a_n)\) tienen signos opuestos, entonces

    \[ I_{n+1}=[a_{n+1},b_{n+1}]\quad\text{with}\quad a_{n+1}=a_n,\ b_{n+1}=c_n \nonumber \]
