A lo largo del tiempo se han utilizado diversos medios de transmisión, como la conexión eléctrica utilizada en telegrafía o los cables de fibra óptica para Internet. Los mensajes digitales se están convirtiendo en la norma para las telecomunicaciones, con señales analógicas como el habla traducidas a señales digitales para su transmisión. Existe una variedad de protocolos para interpretar mensajes en diferentes medios.
La figura 14.1.1 muestra el crecimiento a lo largo de quince años en diversos aspectos de las telecomunicaciones, enfocándose en el servicio de telecomunicaciones e internet. El rápido crecimiento de los usuarios de Internet y de los suscriptores celulares móviles es particularmente notable.
La figura 14.1.2 muestra el crecimiento a lo largo del tiempo de un segmento de telecomunicaciones, es decir, llamadas internacionales desde o hacia Estados Unidos. La cantidad de tráfico ha aumentado sustancialmente, mientras que el precio por minuto ha disminuido en un orden de magnitud de 2000 a 2014.
Las telecomunicaciones están dominadas en Estados Unidos por corporaciones privadas (FCC 1996). En el extranjero, existen ejemplos de proveedores tanto privados como públicos. La estructura de propiedad de la infraestructura de telecomunicaciones es compleja, ya que los propietarios de edificios son responsables de sus propias telecomunicaciones internas y las empresas suelen compartir instalaciones como torres de telefonía celular o postes telefónicos de barrio.
